Classical Dances

Classical dances are dance forms based on Natya Shastra by Bharata muni and recognized by the Sangeet Natya Academy. Classical dances are based on strict movement and gestures.

The basic characteristic features are

  • nritta (pada sanchalan) means foot movement
  • nritya (anga sanchalan) means body movement
  • natya (abhinaya) means face movement

These dances are usually performed by trained dancers. These are learned following a Guru-Shishya System. Dancers practice and study for a long time to master these dance forms.

Classical Dances can evoke 9 types of emotions called Nava rasa

  • Adbhoota means Wonder
  • Bhayanaka means Fear
  • Bibhats means Disgust
  • Hasya means Humorous
  • Karuna means Sorrow
  • Raudra means Anger
  • Shanta means Peace.
  • Shringara means Love
  • Veera means Heroism
