Ayurveda is the oldest system of treating illness. It is believed that Ayurveda is more than 5000 years old system of healing.

Ayur means Life and Veda means knowledge or wisdom. Together it becomes The Science of Life.

Ayurveda gives great importance to the prevention of disease rather than treating it. It mainly concentrates on balance in life, the balance of body and mind. Ayurveda should be used along with Allopathic treatment (western medicine)

It will help to make a person healthy and fit and the person will be less likely to fall ill. It will also help to rebuild stamina and body after an allopathic treatment

According to Ayurveda, there are three systems which govern human body.

  • vata – The Energy of Movement
  • pitta – The Energy of Digestion & Metabolism
  • kapha – The Energy of Body Fluids
Name Basic Elements Governs In Balance Out of Balance
vata Space and Air breathing, heartbeat, muscle movement creativity and flexibility fear and anxiety
pitta Fire and Water digestion, nutrition, metabolism understanding and intelligence anger and jealousy
Kapha Earth and Water bones, cells, muscles love and forgiveness attachment and envy

How to balance vata

  • Keep yourself warm, avoid cold
  • Keep yourself calm
  • Eat warm foods, Avoid cold and raw foods
  • Rest enough and follow a routine

How to balance pitta

  • Avoid heat
  • Avoid spicy and oily food
  • Eat less salt

How to balance kapha

  • Keep yourself active and exercise daily
  • Avoid dairy and other such foods
  • Avoid fat and oil
  • Eat in small amounts

Ayurveda is divided into eight components

• Kāyacikitsā: general medicine

• Kaumāra-bhṛtya: treatment of children

• Śalyatantra: surgical treatment techniques

• Śālākyatantra: treatment of ailments affecting ears, eyes, nose etc.

• Bhūtavidyā: treatment of mind and soul

• Agadatantra: related to poison

• Rasāyanatantra: for long and healthy life

• Vājīkaraṇatantra: for pleasures

Ayurveda has eight ways to diagnose illness

Nadi :: Pulse

Mootra :: Urine

Mala :: Stool

Jihva :: Tongue

Shabda :: Speech

Sparsha :: Touch

Druk :: Vision

Aakruti :: Appearance
